After getting defeated by Arjuna, Chitraratha imparted the knowledge of some magical powers. This knowledge, he said, was passed on by Manu to Soman, to Viśvāvasu and to Chitrarathan. With this knowledge, one can see whatever they wish to see and in whatever manner they would like to see. This knowledge was called Chākshushī Vidyā.

Chitraratha also gifted Arjuna 100 horses that were born in Gandharva Loka. Gandharvas ride these horses, which never get tired though they look lean. When Indra killed Vṛtrāsura with his Vajrāyudha, it broke into pieces. One such fragment became kṣatriya's chariot along with the horses. This accounts for their invincibility and strength.

In his discourse to Arjuna, Chitraratha glorifies Brahmacharya. Then the Gandharva tells glory of Vasiṣṭha and explains the importance of a purohita and asks Arjuna to find a competent Brāhmaṇa and request him to be their purohita to guide them. Then only can a monarch be ever victorious and finally reach Svarga loka.

When the Gandharva addressed him as 'Tāpatya' Arjuna queries him as to why he called him so. Answering this question, Chitraratha narrates the story of King Saṃvaraṇan and Tapati. Tapati was a daughter of Sūrya Devata. Saṃvaraṇan was captivated by her beauty and ultimately marries her with Sūrya Devatā's permission. They begot an illustrious son called 'Kuru' in whose clan was born Arjuna.

During the twelve years when Saṃvaraṇan was sporting with Tapati, there were no rains in his kingdom. Crops, animals, people suffered and died. There was a severe famine. Sage Vasiṣṭha wanted to remedy the situation and so, he brought back Saṃvaraṇan and Tapati. When he stepped back into his kingdom, the skies started pouring copious rains. The kingdom started to prosper again.

Arjuna questions the reason for the enmity of Viśvāmitra against Vasiṣṭha. Gandharva tells the story of Viśvāmitra trying to take away the cow Nandini from Vasiṣṭha's ashram; Once when Viśvāmitra went for hunting, he came upon Vasiṣṭha's Ashram. There he saw the divine cow, Nandinī who gave everything that was asked of her. Desirous of possessing her, Viśvāmitra offered Vasiṣṭha 10,000 cows or his entire kingdom in exchange. Vasiṣṭha refused the offer and this led to their enmity.

When Viśvāmitra tried to seize Nandinī by force, she first appealed to Vasiṣṭha. When the sage pleaded helplessness, due to his sticking to his Brāhmaṇa Dharma, When he pointed out her calf to Nandinī, she became enraged and unleashed terror on Viśvāmitra's troops and scattered and drove them to a distance of 27 miles.

Shakti curses Kalmāṣapāda to turn into Rākṣasa; Viśvāmitra orders Rākṣasa Kinkara to enter Kalmāṣapāda 's body; Kalmāṣapāda kills Shakti and eats him up; Viśvāmitra uses Kalmāṣapāda to kill all the other sons of Vasiṣṭa also in the same way; Vasiṣṭa bears all this patiently and attempts in several ways to end his life.

When sage Vasiṣṭha knew that his daughter-in-law Adṛśyantī was pregnant, he gave up the idea of suicide. One day, the Rākshasa Kalmāṣapāda came to Vasiṣṭha's Ashram. Vasiṣṭha stopped his from advancing by Chanting 'Hūm' and sprinkling divine (purified) water

He was called so because he broke or crushed his grandfather's desire to commit suicide. The name is a combination of Parā and śṛ śṛ daatu means 'to Crush'.

When Parāśara in his anger wanted to destroy the world, sage Vasiṣṭha) advices to him quoting the story of Raja Kritaveerya's descendants (kṣatriyas) who killed the Brāhmaṇas of Bhṛgu kula. The kṣatriyas then came to kill Maharishi Aurva while he was in the womb; Aurva came out of his mother’s thigh, dazzling with blinding brilliance. Seeing this the kṣatriyas lost their eyesight.
