Sankara Jayanti Quiz

Today, 21 April 2026, is Sankara Jayanti. Sankaracharya gave us an enormous library. He provided commentaries, original philosophy and innumerable stotras.
His work in itself is a library within the great library of ancient texts. As Swami Chinmayananda said, Every religion has one Holy Book, in Hinduism I say, Welcome to My Library.
In this quiz, we take you through 12 of the essential texts of Hinduism. Just a drop in the ocean.

Closing Note
We merely took a glance at the Hindu library, Vedas, three Upavedas and three Vedangas; and at the concept of Ithaasas, puranas, agamas, darshanas and Vedanta. What we saw is just one shelf of an enormous library.
Shakaracharya alone wrote atleast 18 commentaries, 23 original philosophical works and 73 stotras. The Mahapuranas alone have 4,00,000 verses, Mahabharata alone has 89000 verses.
P.V. Kane’s History of Dharmashastras alone is 6500 pages long and we did not even cover it in this quiz. The number of secondary research on Vedas is enormous. By the year 1930 there were atleast 6500 works all over the world (Louis Renou); and between 1930 and 1945 alone, another 3500 were added (R.N Dandekar). Regional works such as Narayaneeyam and Kamba Ramayanam are by themselves monumental works.
Two beautiful books can introduce you to the vast Hindu library. The Essential Sanatana Dharma by Shatavdhani R. Ganesh (translated by Hari Ravikumar) has a concise 29 page chapter on the foundational texts of Hinduism. The second book, “Why are we Like this Only, A Guide to Hindu Shastras” by Ami Ganatra is a dedicated book on this subject.
