Rama, Lakshmana, and Sita reached the banks of river Tamasa. They rested there for the night. Lakshmana kept vigil carrying his bow and arrow. A big crowd of people from Ayodhya had also reached there by then and they insisted that Rama should return to Ayodhya the next day, or else, they will also follow them to the forest.

Rama got the chariot ready before dawn and drove away leaving false tracks in a different direction. The people were tired and asleep. When they woke up, they realized that Rama had left. Disappointed, they returned to the city.

The place is called Chakia, referring to chakia diya, i.e he misguided them. The village is to the east (Purva) of the campsite.

Guha was excited to know about the arrival of Rama. He got ready lots of fruits and flowers and brought them to Rama and prostrated before him.

Guha said that Rama is entering kingdom of Nishadha which is under Ayodhya's command. He requested Rama to take over and govern the country as their king. Rama declined since he has to spend fourteen years in the forest, not in a palace or a house. He cannot enter or eat from any house.

Rama said that however, he would like to accept something from Guha. Rama asked him to bring some sap-milk of the banyan tree to tie up their hair.

Guha was distraught seeing the condition of Rama and Sita. Hearing Guha's laments, Lakshmana told him about Karma. Good and bad experiences come to us based on our karma. Karma follows us from the previous births and there are no practical ways to transfer or donate our pleasure and pain to others. There are no alternatives to experiencing the consequences of your karma. You cannot share it with others, nor can you get rid of it. Human life is a mixture of positive and negative experiences, which carry on through this life and beyond. No one will continue to be either in sorrow or in happiness all the time. Wise people face life courageously and without getting attached to experiences whether they are to our liking or not. A wise person treats good and bad with equanimity. In the Valmiki Ramayana, a distraught Lakshmana pours out his agony to Guha.

Shringaverpur is situated on Lucknow-Prayagraj road, about 30kms upstream of Prayagraj. Rama dismissed his chariot here. Sringaverpur appears to be the confines of civilisaion and after this point, Rama's journey was through forests and on foot. There is a platform on the bank of the river Ganga, Ramchaura, believed to be the place where Lord Ram stayed overnight while proceeding to his exile. His were washed by Nishadraj before he carried them across the river on his boat.

Rama, Sita and Lakshmana reached the Ashram of Valmiki. Sage Valmiki was pleased to see Rama. Rama requested Rishi Valmiki to point best places suitable for safe stay. Valmiki tells Rama that the whole world resides in him. He can live along with Sita, as a traveller wherever his name is sung, and virtues are extolled. He then continues to tell his own story of how, inspite of being born in a Brahmin family, he led a wayward life. The saptharishis taught him that his family does not partake his sins, though they enjoy the riches he brings out of his dacoity. He describes how he got the name Valmiki. He chanted mara , mara continuously which became Rama, Rama for one thousand years. Anthills grew around his body and since he came out of it, he was called Valmiki. The sage made a hermitage for Rama, Sita and Lakshmana with two chambers.

Dasaratha revealed that he would die grieving for his son. This was the result of a curse by a sage. Dasaratha had mistakenly killed his son who was taking care of the sage and his wife, both of whom were blind. Dasaratha had shot an arrow when the son was filling water in a stream, mistaking the sound for elephants. He confessed his crime to the couple. They jumped into the funeral pyre of their son but cursed that Dasaratha also would die the same way, grieving for his son. Chanting the names of Rama, Sita and Lakshmana, Dasaratha took his last breath.

Rajapur is the birthplace of Tulsidas. He started writing Ramacharitramanas in the year 1574 AD. Portions of the original manuscript are preserved in the home of descendants of Tulsidas' disciples.
