Rooted in the Sanskrit word mad (meaning "intoxicating"), Matsara evolved to signify envy, jealousy, and selfishness.
In mythology, the demon Matsarasura was born from Indra’s pramada (heedlessness). Armed with a powerful boon from Shiva, the demon wreaked havoc across the three worlds. To restore order, Ganesha incarnated as Vakratunda—"the one with the curved trunk." He successfully defeated Matsarasura but ultimately chose to forgive him.
Vakratunda's trunk symbolizes intelligence, strength, and flexibility. Its shape mirrors the primordial sound "Om," which the Upanishads describe as supreme spiritual knowledge.
Furthermore, Vakratunda’s lion mount serves as a reminder that our inner vices must be aggressively challenged. This majestic form of Ganesha remains widely revered today, especially in the beloved hymn "Vakratunda Mahakaya."

When Shiva’s boon made Matsarasura unstoppable, Dattatreya revealed the power of Om, guiding the gods to Vakratunda for help.
Dattatreya embodies the Trimurti (Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva), depicted with three heads and six hands. He is accompanied by four dogs (the Vedas) and Kamadhenu, the divine cow. He was born after the Trimurti tested Devi Anasuya’s chastity by demanding she serve them unclothed. By transforming them into infants to feed them, she earned a boon, asking them to be born as her son.
Revered for simplicity across Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Andhra, Dattatreya is credited with the Avadhuta Gita, a historic text that inspired Nath Yogis and Vivekananda. The image is a Raja Ravi Varma painting of the deity.

The Puranas use stories to teach philosophy, like the tale of Ekadanta. Here, Eka represents Maya (illusion) and Danta signifies Brahman (truth), symbolizing truth's victory over ego.
When the demon Madasura—embodying the intoxication of identity—became invincible, Rishi Sanatkumara advised the gods to invoke Ekadanta (Ganesha). Upon merely seeing Ganesha, Madasura instantly surrendered.
Ekadanta also translates to "one tusk." According to a famous legend, Ganesha broke his own tusk to use as a pen while writing the Mahabharata as Sage Vyasa dictated. This iconic moment is depicted in the accompanying Gita Press image.

While films often depict Narada as a gossiping wanderer chanting "Narayan," classical texts revere his profound wisdom. He famously inspired Valmiki’s Ramayana.
In the Chandogya Upanishad, despite mastering vast worldly knowledge, Narada feels unfulfilled—a relatable struggle where success doesn't guarantee peace. He approaches Sanatkumara, who teaches him a step-by-step process to transcend finite learning and realize the infinite (Bhuma).
Sanatkumara ("eternal youth") is one of Brahma’s four mind-born sons. His philosophy of Bhuma echoes throughout the Puranas, notably in the Ekadanta tale. The accompanying Wikimedia image by Vrajvihari depicts these four divine youths.

When Shiva entered a deeply detached meditation, the gods sought Parvati’s help. She assumed an alluring form to break his trance. Upon discarding this form, it transformed into Mohasura (delusion), the king of vices.
After gaining immense power from Surya, Mohasura wreaked havoc. Surya then advised the gods to invoke Ganesha. Manifesting as Mahodara, Ganesha simply approached the demon, who instantly surrendered.
As the image illustrates, Mahodara’s large belly symbolizes containing the entire universe. He digests both good and bad experiences with perfect equanimity—a state of inner balance we strive to achieve through his worship.

When Kubera visited Kailasa, his lustful gaze toward Parvati angered her. Kubera’s subsequent fearful energy manifested as the demon Lobhasura.
After studying under Shukracharya, Lobhasura conquered the three worlds. Advised by Rishi Raibhya, the gods invoked Gajanana, whose mere presence filled the demon with guilt and prompted his immediate surrender.
This teaches that self-realization conquers lust. Gajanana’s elephant head symbolizes the patience, meticulousness, and strength needed for this journey.
(Note: While words like kamana [wish], trishna [desire], and abhilasha [aspiration] are sometimes used as synonyms for lobha, they carry much more positive connotations.)

During the churning of the cosmic ocean for nectar (amrit), Vishnu assumed the alluring form of Mohini to distract the asuras. After the nectar had been secured, Shiva felt a deep desire for Mohini. When Vishnu abruptly reverted to his original form, Shiva’s resulting frustration and wrath birthed the demon Krodhasura. Guided by Shukracharya, Krodhasura conquered the universe. Peace was restored only by Ganesha's incarnation as Lambodara, whose massive potbelly was large enough to consume and digest all the world's anger.
Interestingly, an alternate tradition tells a vastly different story of Shiva and Mohini. In this narrative, their union produces the divine Ayyappa (Sastha), showing how independent regional traditions can weave radically different narratives around the same deities.

Jalandhara could not be conquered till the time his wife Vrinda was chaste. Vishnu took the form of Jalandhar and tricked Vrinda. From their union was born Kamasura.
Vrinda cursed Vishnu to become a lifeless stone and that is how Saligrama is worshipped as Vishnu. Impressed by her virtue, Vishnu blessed Vrinda to be worshipped as a Tulsi plant.
Kamasura caused havoc across the universe. Such a formidable challenge required a powerful force. Ganesha incarnated as Vikata, riding a peacock, to tame the demon. The peacock is a bird that likes to preen and is synonymous with pride. Vikata has tamed pride and thus can control desire. Peacock is also the vahana of Ganesha’s brother Kartikeya.

Once Devi Parvati was very happy and burst out laughing. Her laughter created a handsome boy. She felt attached to her creation. He was thus called Mamasura (Mama – Mine), representing possessiveness or attachment.
Mamasura was a dharmic person till Sambarasura (Sambara – magical) lured him into the world of vice & excess. The gods were terrified. Vighnaraja tamed Mamasura. The lesson is profound – we can be easily lured into the trap of unhealthy attachment and it can become a huge obstacle in our life. Worship of Vighnaraja can help remove this obstacle.

Shesha, or Ananta Nag, is the massive thousand-headed serpent who floats on the cosmic ocean, serving as the resting bed for Lord Vishnu. By supporting the universe on his hoods, he is the ultimate symbol of cosmic stability.
Ganesha incarnates as Vighnaraja and rides Sheshanaga. This signals that his mastery over obstacles is rooted in strong foudnations. Just like the stability Sheshanaga provides to the cosmos.
The eternal bond between Vishnu and Shesha extends beyond the cosmic ocean. They continually work together, famously incarnating as the brothers Rama and Lakshmana in the Ramayana, and later as Krishna and Balarama in the Mahabharata.

Brahma once made Surya the ruler of the world. In his pride, Surya thought that he was lord of the universe. Just as he was thinking with pride, he sneezed and the demon Ahamkarasura was born. The asura started wreaking havoc till Dhumravarna defeated him. Dhumravarna means smoke hued. It reflects the nature of the vice that Ganesha confronts. Pride often obscures clear sight the way smoke obscures a flame. Obscured by the smoke, the flame continues to consume without it ever being seen fully.

Ganesha’s mouse vahana, Mooshakraj, has multiple origin stories reflecting his immense popularity among devotees.
The most common tale features the Gandharva Krauncha, cursed to become a giant mouse. After he wreaked havoc on farmers' fields, Ganesha subdued and tamed him.
The Mudgala Purana offers another account: Gajamukhasura, an arrogant, elephant-faced demon made invincible by Shiva. Protected against ordinary weapons, Ganesha fought him using his own broken tusk—the same one used to write the Mahabharata—as a lance. Defeated, the demon transformed into a tiny mouse to flee. Ganesha caught him but showed compassion, sparing his life and adopting him as his devoted vehicle.
These varied myths perfectly illustrate Ganesha’s power to conquer arrogance and transform it into lifelong devotion.
