Portuguese in India

Today (Dec 19) is when Goa became free, fourteen years after rest of India. The Portuguese were the first European colonial power to arrive in India, landing in 1498 and staying until 1961. Although they initially dominated oceanic trade, they were soon surpassed by the Dutch and the British. Goa became their primary Portuguese enclave. However Cardinal Gracias famously said, “Goan Catholic culture is Christian, not Portuguese.”
