Sage Bṛhadaśva narrated the story to Yudhiṣṭhira during the exile to console him and teach that even great kings undergo suffering.

Influenced by Kali, Pushkara challenged Nala to a dice game in which Nala lost his kingdom and wealth.

Despite his liking for Damayanti, Nala acted as messenger of the celestial Gods and went to Damayanti and asked her to choose one of them in the swayamvara

When Damayanti entered the Swayamvara hall, she found five identical Nalas. She prayed sincerely to the Gods for guidance and she came to know that Devas will never blink their eyes, won't sweat, their feet will never rest on land, flowers will be fresh on them and they will be dust free. This made Damayanti to offer the garland to Nala.

Being pleased with the righteousness of Nala, God Varuna gave these two boons.

Indiran, Agni, Yama and Varuna offers 2 boons each totalling to 8 to Nala.

Kali wanted to marry Damayanti. However, he reached the swayamvara after Damayanti had already chosen Nala. Kali vowed that he destroy Nala when opportunity arose, though he was advised against that by the celestials.

Kali could not enter Nala until he commits any mistakes. He omitted to wash his legs properly before worship which made Kali to enter him.

King Bhima's children were Damayantī, Damaḥ, Dāntaḥ and Damanaḥ

Vārṣṇeya was King Nala's loyal charioteer

When Nala was deeply lost in the game of dice, Damayanti summoned a smart maid servant of hers and sent her to go and tell Nala the details of remaining properties (after what was lost in the game of dice). Nala ignored this information and continued with the game.

The gods Indra, Agni, Yama, and Varuṇa attended Damayantī's Svayaṁvara. Kubera was not among them.

Indra, Maghavath, and Śakra are all other names of Indra Bhagavan. Maghavat means very generous at heart.

Śakra means one who is powerful, mighty.
