Damayanti recognized Bāhuka through his words, actions and qualities, even though his appearance had changed.

Vārshneya had served as King Nala's charioteer before Nala's exile. When he witnessed Bāhuka's unmatched skill in handling horses and driving the chariot, it made him suspect that Bāhuka was — Indra's Charioteer Maathili, or Shalihotra who is well known for Ashwa Sastra or King Nala whom he had served.

When Rituparna learns that the Svayamvara was only a strategy to bring Bāhuka (Nala) to Vidarbha, he does not react with anger. Instead, he acknowledges his mistake in having entertained improper thoughts about Damayanti's conduct, receives Ashwa Vidhya from Nala (having already imparted Ganitha Vidhya and Dyūtha Vidhya to Bāhukan), and returns to his kingdom with grace and without any resentment. This highlights his humility and nobility.

Having heard about Bāhuka whom she believes to be Nala she sends a messenger to Ayodhya to announce her second Svayamvara so that Nala will come to Vidarbha

To convince Nala of her purity and unwavering fidelity, Damayanti declared that she had never intended to marry any man other than him. She invoked the Sun (Surya), the Moon (Chandra), and the Wind (Vāyu)—the ever-present witnesses of all actions—to testify to the truth of her words. Pleased with her truthfulness and chastity, the gods affirmed her innocence.

Ṛtuparṇa said the fallen leaves were 101 more than those remaining on the tree with 1 additional fallen leaf and fruit and specifically counted the two branches of the Vibhitaka tree as containing 5 crore leaves and 2,095 fruits. This astonishing demonstration of Ganitha Vidya prompted Nala (Bahuka) to seek this knowledge.

Nala shared his knowledge of horses with Ṛtuparṇa
